Animata is an open source real-time animation software, designed to create animations, interactive background projections for concerts, theatre and dance performances. It somehow remembers me the Aftereffects Puppet Tool, mixed with the random arboretum for processing. Give it a try and share your results.

i’m not sure if it is correct to use the term “animation” in these context. the camera is capturing the live action movment and applying it one to one to a character. may be it is more close to rotoscopy (copy). live action is cutting a real movment in 24 or 25 frames and the projection is reproducing it. animation is creating 12, 24 or so frames per second. the the difference for me lays herein. reproduction and creation. what is animation?
